ABOUT THE AUTHOR (unpaged at end)

AUTHOR NOTE, SUMMARY,
AND BOOK DESCRIPTION

AUTHOR NOTE = Daniel J. Siegel has written many books that demonstrate how mindfulness can be integrated into modern brain science. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and executive director of the Mindsight Institute. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and his post-graduate medical credentials at UCLA. He was the recipient of the UCLA psychiatry department's teaching award and honorary fellowships for his work as director of UCLA's training program in child psychiatry and the Infant and Preschool Service and is a mindfulness expert, working to develop the field of Interpersonal Neurobiology, which is an interdisciplinary view of life experience.

Siegel is the author of several New York Times bestsellers including the two books featured on this website [1] THE MINDFUL BRAIN: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being published by W.W. Norton, 2007 (i-xx, 387 pages); and [2] MINDSIGHT: The New Science of Personal Transformation published by Bantam Books/Random House, 2010 (vii-xviii, 314 pages).

Other bestsellers about parenting and child development include: [3] The Developing Mind: Toward a Neurobiology of Interpersonal Experience; [4] Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain with Tina Payne Bryson; [5] The Whole-Brain Child; [6] No-Drama Discipline; [7] Parenting from the Inside Out, co-written with Mary Hartzell; and [8] Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence --- The Groundbreaking Meditation Practice. He lives in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY = This book is both inspiring and informative since it offers exciting new proof that people are not hardwired to behave in certain ways. Instead, they have the ability to harness the power of their minds to resculpt the neural pathways of their brains. The foreword is by Daniel Goleman, author of the book, Emotional Intelligence.

BOOK DESCRIPTION = This book integrates neuroscience research with the field of mental health. The potent skill "mindsight" allows you to make positive changes in your brain and in your life. Through his synthesis of a broad range of scientific research with applications to everyday life, Siegel has developed novel approaches to counseling. Now he has written the first book that will help all of us understand the potential we have to create our own lives. The book shows us mindsight in action as it explains how this new therapy can heal serious mental problems: Is there a memory that torments you, or an irrational fear you can't shake?; Do you sometimes become unreasonably angry or upset and find it hard to calm down? Do you ever wonder why you can't stop behaving the way you do, no matter how hard you try? Are you and your child (or parent, partner, or boss) locked in a seemingly inevitable pattern of conflict?

What if you could escape mental and emotional traps like these and live a fuller, richer, happier life? This isn't mere speculation but the result of several decades of careful hands-on clinical work by Siegel who is one of the revolutionary global innovators in the integration of brain science into the practice of psychotherapy. Using case histories from his practice, he shows how, by following the proper steps, nearly everyone can learn how to focus their attention on the internal world of the mind in a way that will literally change the wiring and architecture of their brain.
Many extraordinary stories illustrate how mindsight can help you master your emotions, heal your relationships, and reach yur fullest potential.
